| Introducing South Norfolk Youth Action |
|
South Norfolk Youth Action is a forum which offers young people the opportunity to get involved in the policy making process of their council and has been involved in writing the council’s youth involvement strategy. By 2009 we had diversified and created several specific groups that specialise in citizenship. Each group has a direct impact on local democracy by influencing the decision makers and raising the profile of young people across South Norfolk. We hope that there is something here for all young people aged between 11 and 19. If you are now thinking that you would like to get involved with SNYA then download an ‘Application Form’ and ‘Contract Agreement’ form now. Before you return your forms take some time to look over our ‘contract agreement’. We don’t have any rules just an understanding of fairness and respect. It is compulsory to sign the contract prior to joining SNYA. If you are happy with the Contract Agreement’ then post it, along with your Application Form, to the address given on the ‘Contact Us’ page. The majority of our meetings take place in Long Stratton. Transport and buffet is provided. Young Interview Panel It is now common practice, by good councils, as part of the recruitment process for positions that work with young people or children that the candidate is interviewed by young people. South Norfolk Youth Action (SNYA) has a group of eight trained young people who regularly interview adults. Not only is this is a great opportunity for us but also for the employer, they gain an understanding of how comfortable the candidates are in the company of young people and if they are able to relate to us. We work in teams of three and use our own question bank that we adapt for the position we are recruiting into. Once we have interviewed the candidates we then come together in a meeting with managers, who have held separate interviews, to discuss our choice and recommendations for the position. Over the months we have assisted in the recruitment process for a School Support Worker, two Social Workers and a Lead Youth Support Worker. SNYA Radio South Norfolk Youth Action (SNYA) is launching an internet radio station in 2009. This is a new project that has got off to a flying start. After spending several evenings completing funding applications we now have monies available to start purchasing studio equipment. We have secured a room at Long Stratton Leisure Centre to broadcast from and we are now looking at planning our broadcast schedule.
Media Team This is a group of nine young people who come together to film and record events at South Norfolk Youth Action(SNYA). We usually work in conjunction with ‘SNYA Young Promoters and SNYA Interview Panel for larger projects such as Synergy, an Olympiad event held at Whittlingham Country Park. On this occasion SNYA were responsible for the evaluation of the event. Teams of four young people armed with cameras, audio equipment, walkie-talkies and (old school) pen and paper interviewed members of the public about how they were enjoying the event and what activities they had visited. This material was edited up at the Garage Theatre in Norwich. The media team recorded all the footage during our project ‘Young People as Police Trainers’. One of our members filmed from a Cherry Picker to get the overhead shots. Back at the office we worked in teams of three to edit the film. One part was about a young person who got arrested for dealing drugs and what happened to him at the police station. Our youth worker now uses this film when he visits youth clubs to talk about crime and anti social behaviour. We will shortly start our training to operate the new equipment for our internet radio station. Environmental Team Are you interested in green issues? Have a look at page 13 of the Link magazine
This is so new I am not sure I can even list it on this web page. A group of young people from SNYA are in advanced negotiations to work as peer mentors with other young people with disabilities. For the right type of young people this is potentially the most rewarding opportunity that SNYA will offer. Keep popping back to this site for updates. Southern Area Peer Researchers This is a brand new team of 14 to 19 year old young people. We are looking for one more young person from South Norfolk to join our existing team of five. After you have completed your training you will be paid £5 per hour, in the form of gift vouchers of your choice, for the work that is undertaken. ![]() Young Promoters Group South Norfolk Youth Action (SNYA) Young Promoters Group is a group of nine young people whom come

South Norfolk Youth Action (SNYA) was formed as a direct request from young people during ‘Local Democracy Week’ 2003, to be more involved in the decision-making processes of South Norfolk Council. Following support by Cabinet and Members, South Norfolk Youth Action was formed by a group of young people from across the district in July 2004.
SNYA members chose to officially launch themselves during Local Democracy Week 2004 with a live music event at the Diss District Resources Base (Youth Centre). SNYA members felt that the event was a great success, and has raised the profile of the youth forum to both adults and young people. The group are meeting regularly every month, throughout school term, and are a force for change within the council and community at large.

together to organise and stage events. Our last event was ‘I like Comedy’ held at Long Stratton.
